Laying of the final section of the pedestrian and cycle bridge Dräi Eechelen
On 15 September 2023, François Bausch, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Mobility and Public Works, Sam Tanson, Minister for Culture, together with Marc Widong, Director of the Fonds Kirchberg, attended the final section of the pedestrian and cycle bridge linking Avenue John F. Kennedy to Parc Dräi Eechelen.
The new pedestrian and cycle bridge in the Plateau de Kirchberg district, planned as part of the City of Luxembourg's General Development Plan (PAG) as a "corridor and space reserved for soft mobility projects", blends harmoniously into the landscape and wooded environment.
By crossing the Trois Glands national forest and linking the contemporary urban development of the Kirchberg plateau, corresponding to the Rout Bréck-Pafendall interchange, with the Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean (Mudam) and the Musée Dräi Eechelen, the new footbridge will increase the site's visibility and visitor numbers.
The design and layout of the project take into account the evolution of the forest in order to preserve the movement of existing trees as much as possible. The lighting system integrated into the bridge ensures the safety of users, while limiting any impact on the nightlife of local wildlife. Similarly, the limited number of piles reduces the impact on the forest floor and the clearing. Duplex stainless steel was chosen for its high mechanical properties, weather resistance and durability. Mirror polishing will give the footbridge a special aesthetic, and its sculptural appearance will make it unique in Luxembourg.
The bronze sculpture Beliebte Stellen/Privileged Points (2017) by artist Nairy Baghramian has been relocated from Fort Thüngen to Avenue John F. Kennedy, providing a remarkable point of entry to the Parc des Trois Glands and the museum, which will be accessible to pedestrians and cyclists thanks to the new bridge.
The overall cost of this project is EUR 7,000,000 including VAT. The opening is expected in early 2024.
