Kuebebierg city farm

Sustainable farming in preparation

The city farm project is part of a global strategy for development of the emerging districts of Laangfur and Kuebebierg, which aims to create a “city of short travel routes”.

The idea of a city farm, integrated within the district, translates the desire to maintain farming activity on a site which, today, is one of the last on the Kirchberg to still be worked by farmers. As biodiversity is an integral part of the design for the Kuebebierg district, the aim of the Fund is to promote more extensive management of green spaces by moving from itinerant grazing, already undertaken twice a year using a flock of sheep, towards a more established practice of grazing, the intention being to offer suitable solutions for management of the Protected Area of National Interest and the Natura 2000 area which encircle the plateau on which the Kuebebierg is situated.

Continuing the logic of creating short travel routes, the Kirchberg Fund is targeting multifunctional farming activities with economic, environmental and socio-cultural services (grazing, market gardening, arboriculture, sales, educational visits, environmental events and awareness-raising, and an agro-tourism offering). The areas to be reserved to provide an economically-viable farm are 600 m2 for the building, 3,000 m2 for glasshouses and 65,000 m2 for grazing. With these areas, practically all forms of farming are possible: a commercial micro-farm, an association for the preservation of small-scale farming (association pour le maintien d’une agriculture paysanne, AMAP), or a collective or cooperative farm. Potential spaces will be supplemented later as urban development advances, notably through the installation of roof gardens or creating vegetable gardens and flower beds in the heart of the residential islands. As well as the city farm, a craft city is planned for the eastern part of the Kuebebierg. The various farming operations could therefore foster local food production, sold directly on-site.
