Internat Michel Lucius

A boarding school between green space and the urban environment

The Michel Lucius boarding school will be located at the north-eastern limits of the new Laangfur district. Given its position, beside the pedestrian path running along the Märtesgrond, it will form a junction between the primary school, its entrance area and the secondary school with its sports complex in the north of the Kuebebierg district.

The boarding school will be integrated into its built and natural surroundings, taking account of the difference in levels between the Boulevard Pierre Frieden and the Märtesgrond. It will be constructed on built foundations which will border onto the road, with its lower level being adapted to the existing greened space.

The building programme comprises two distinct elements: on the one hand, the structure of the boarding school itself, with 48 individual bedrooms to accommodate children aged from 10 to 18, and on the other hand 40 individual studios for young adults aged from 16 to 27. These bedrooms are linked to the shared activity spaces, and to the administrative facilities specific to the boarding school.

The two types of accommodation translate into two wings of 4 or 5 levels, built on a common foundation and forming a green island in their centre, by virtue of their concave shape and their juxtaposed movement.

The boarding school comprises three functional built elements:

  • the foundation,
  • the wing for young adults, on the road side,
  • the boarding school wing to the north.

These built elements are complemented by exterior spaces, the upper piazza, the greened interior and the lower piazza, together making up a harmonious overall footprint.
