Urban farm
Sustainable farming in preparation
The city farm project is part of a global strategy for development of the emerging districts of Laangfur and Kuebebierg, which aims to create a 15-minute city, where residents can meet most of their daily needs within a short distance.
The urban farm, soon to become an integral part of the Luga – Luxembourg Urban Garden 2025 program, is set to pioneer at Kuebebierg. The Fonds has signed an agreement with Aurel & Axel for the development and operation of this urban farm.
Aiming to blend innovative and traditional agricultural practices, Aurel & Axel are committed to tackling environmental challenges while maintaining economic viability. The urban farm will focus on producing seasonal food products, utilizing water-efficient practices tailored to the local terrain. Beyond farming, Aurel & Axel plan to offer a variety of community services, including dining options, local product sales, communal spaces, educational activities, and gardening advice for community plots. The ultimate goal is to create a vibrant living space serving the local community.
Founded by friends with shared values and ambitions, Aurel & Axel is dedicated to promoting environmentally sustainable agriculture close to consumers. Specializing in indoor farming, the company has developed diverse expertise, ranging from mushroom cultivation to microgreens, aromatic herbs, and edible flowers.
This versatility has enabled them to forge partnerships with over 120 restaurants, including 50 listed in the Michelin Guide. Their weekly direct deliveries to these establishments highlight Aurel & Axel's practical commitment to product quality.
Since October 2023, the company has successfully operated a 380 m2 hydroponic greenhouse on the rooftop of the Economic Development Council for Construction (CDEC) building in Bettembourg, contributing to the European GROOF project, which aims to integrate agriculture into urban areas.
Combining traditional approaches like market gardening and agroforestry with innovative techniques such as bioponics—growing plants without soil using an organic and biological nutrient solution—Aurel & Axel aim to provide a wide variety of fruits and vegetables year-round, without generating agricultural waste.
The modular approach of the farm, using containers, will create a solid core and allow the facilities to adapt to changing needs as the Kuebebierg Special Development Plan (PAP) progresses. The initial phase will include:
- Market gardening: 5,000 m2
- Existing orchard space and new orchard/agroforestry area: 10,000 m2
- Modular urban farm space (microgreens/mushrooms and greenhouse, etc.): 2,000 m2
- Tall-stem orchard around the recreational area: 7,500 m2
In addition to contributing to a 15-minute city strategy through local production and sales, the urban farm will maintain on-site agriculture, preserve heritage, and educate and raise awareness about food origins.
