Redevelopment of the south side of Avenue John F. Kennedy
Towards an urban artery on a human scale
Going to work on foot or by bike in complete safety, walking along a street bordered by trees and attractive façades, lingering in a public square to read and meet up with friends by chance – this is what Avenue John F. Kennedy could look like in a few years’ time.
With the tram taken into service in 2017, the former expressway has changed in appearance, whilst pursuing its metamorphosis into an artery of soft mobility. Based on an outline for revising the area opposite the “University” stop that the Gehl office presented in its final report for its global study of the public spaces of the Kirchberg, the Fund will be reviewing the profile of the avenue over its full length.
In practice, the task will involve filling in the gaps in the network of cycle paths, improving the readability of the routes to be taken, and heightening safety for all users, young or old, experienced cyclists and novice riders. This is undertaken in an endeavour to extract full benefit from the new infrastructures realised specially for sustainable mobility.
The general recommendations of the Gehl office will similarly be integrated into the design of the mixed developments which will extend from the south side of the avenue, for greater coherence of the built environment.
