European Investment Bank 3rd extension
A building with high energy performance
The European Investment Bank (EIB) is currently building a 3rd extension with a surface area of 50,000 m2 on the land along Boulevard Konrad Adenauer to the north-east of the 2nd extension.
The structure will consist of a body of buildings along Blvd K. Adenauer. There will be 7 storeys (ground floor+6, with the top floor recessed) with a maximum of 5 storeys on the Val de Bons Malades side as well as a 16-storey building (with a technical service floor) overlooking a forecourt to create a transition with the 2nd extension. A pedestrian link to the valley from the forecourt is also planned. The team which won the competition launched by the EIB in 2013 consists of the architectural bureau Mecanoo (NL) and the engineering bureau Burohappold (UK). They have developed an architectural form in keeping with the “Lasdun” building, framing the central glass building in a balanced manner and unifying this group of buildings. In 2018, Mecanoo withdrew from the project and has been replaced by the Spanish bureau IDOM. The future building will house the entire staff of 1 500 who presently work in the parent building which is nearing the end of its viable life and requires renovation.
