Home for international asylum seekers

A construction combining speed of execution and respect for the environment

On behalf of the National Reception Office, the Public Building Administration (ABP, Administration des bâtiments publics) is building a home for international asylum seekers, to be integrated into the built environment of the Grünewald residential district.

The ground floor houses a multi-purpose room for the residents of the Grünewald district, which will replace the red "Quartierstuff" container currently located on land between Rue Edward Steichen and Rue Charles Bernhoeft. The volume of the building is defined by the external emergency stairs, behind a vertical façade in terracotta, and by the balconies on the garden side. As the building needs to be built to the shortest of timeframes and with the least grey energy possible, a construction method in wood and with minimal use of concrete has been chosen, to form large, prefabricated elements which are assembled on-site. The façade is designed as a suspended façade on a wooden-frame construction, involving a high degree of prefabrication. The basement is in concrete poured on-site, as is the interior stairwell. Together, they play a part in the building's structural strengthening.

The external spaces for private use are located on the southern side of the building. A wall separates them from the Rue Dr. Nicolas Clasen. The terrace below the balconies and the access path to the outbuilding in the garden are planned to be executed using slab paving. A parking space for delivery vehicles will be realised using permeable paving. The remainder of the exterior spaces will be grassed.
